Broadway I [Films in Progress]

Broadway I–II are exploratory documentations of street performances in 1970s new York. As indicated by the title, Lassnig filmed drag performers and a street theater troupe on Broadway, one of Manhattan’s major thoroughfares. The films revel in the stylistic experimentation of the street performers, and the playful approach to costume and identity that characterized the city’s vibrant queer communities. Inspired by the economy and ingenuity she witnessed in such street performances, Lassnig
uses these films as an occasion to challenge and push her own experiments with the technical capabilities of her camera. (Jocelyn Miller)
