Mountain Woman [Films in Progress]

Filmed in the artist’s home province of Carinthia in the town of Maltaberg, Mountain Woman chronicles the daily work routine of a mountain farmer as she cycles through her chores in a brusque choreography of caretaking. Lassnig follows her as she does the strenuous work of tending to her humble farm, her animals, and her children, showing the extensive network of living beings sustained by her tireless efforts. A character study, Lassnig reveals domestic labor to be heroic through Mountain Woman’s impressive feats and her charismatic, rugged beauty. This admiring portrait thus joins the female character studies that comprise Lassnig’s Soul Sisters series. (Jocelyn Miller, Maria Lassnig. Film Works/ Filmography [excerpt])
